N!AE G≠KAU

“I was born and raised in Dobe, Botswana, near Tsodilo Hills, where my grandmother was born. I remember the first time I met |Kunta |Ai!ae. I was still a girl, too young to marry. When I first met him he was putting on his loincloth and getting ready for a hunt. He said, ‘You must grow up quickly so that we can marry.’ He knew we would marry. He was also a great hunter and always brought back the meat. I was thrilled to marry him when I grew up.

“|Kunta was a healer when I met him. He knew everything about healing and he danced all the songs for the animals. The community would sing all night at his place. They would often dance throughout the night. |Kunta would want to heal them. Some people were scared of him because he was so strong when he stood and shook. I sat with the women and sang when I watched him dance for the first time. He danced with another healer. I remember that they gave each other nails.

“|Kunta was very fortunate. He received his first nails from the Sky God. His father and brother were with him when it happened. They were at home together, and while |Kunta was sleeping in the night he had a special kabi and was told to sing; the songs immediately came through him. He picked up his n|om songs that way. He learned the giraffe song and started dancing it. In his kabi he was dancing the giraffe dance and then God gave him the nails.

“After he received the giraffe medicine, the giraffe would always come to him. |Kunta had a very special kabi where he dreamed he was riding a giraffe. He got very hot and was trembling so strongly that he started to cry. He woke up and started singing very hard. He was in first creation.

“In another kabi, God threw him inside a giraffe’s intestine. He discovered that this is where the dancing comes from. He went through the anus of the giraffe from behind and found himself dancing with the ancestors. |Kunta believed that this was his most powerful and important kabi. Sometimes people cook and eat the large intestines of an animal in order to help awaken their n|om. But whenever a giraffe was slaughtered, my husband didn’t want the intestine to be cooked for him to eat because he owned the giraffe dance and he had to respect that organ and animal by not eating it.

“I was living with |Kunta when he had that kabi. Later I became very sick and the other healers and elders told him that he must sing and heal his wife. Another healer had given me some nails of n|om that nearly killed me. They weren’t correctly aligned so they hurt too much.*56 My husband had to heal me and he did.

“|Kunta |Ai!ae now lives in the village in the sky. The stars are the eyes of the ancestors. There are some stars that are his eyes.
